Travis Simms, Jr.

Boxing Champion/Personal Trainer

Former two-time WBA Super Welterweight Champion of the World, Travis Simms Jr. has boxing in his blood. He and his identical twin brother, Tarvis who is also a professional boxer are the 5th generation of boxers in their family. Travis and Tarvis are the youngest of 8 siblings and learned the art of boxing from their father, who was a Philadelphia state champion.

Travis started to compete at the age of 5 under the direction of John L Harris, Sr. Travis competed in hundreds of competitions as an amateur and set a goal to be a World Champion early on.
Some of his greatest amateur accomplishments include the following:

  • 1997 New York Golden Glove Jr. Middleweight Champion, Voted MVP of the Jr. Middleweight division and awarded the “Sugar Ray Robinson Award”
  • 1996 American Boxing Classic Jr. Middleweight Champion
  • 1996 Olympic Trials Jr. Middleweight Semi-Finalist
  • 1995 National P.A.L. Jr. Middleweight Champion
  • Four-time New England Golden Gloves Champion & 6x Western Massachusetts Champions

Travis turned professional with (former Manager) Panos Eliades of Panix Promotion in 1997 and made his professional debut in 1998 stopping Michael Brown in the 3rd round. Travis kept busy and fought 6 times in 1999. The year 2000 proved to be a good year for Travis as one of the highlights included fighting on the Lennox Lewis/David Tua under card in November 2000. Travis (who was un-rated at the time) fought and beat then #3 WBC and #7 WBA rated Kevin Kelly of Australia. Travis dominated the world-rated Kelly every round and knocked him down twice before winning a unanimous decision! Travis’s dream of becoming a World Champion became clearer and within reach.

In November 2002 Travis accomplished yet another goal on his road to becoming World Champion. He captured the N.A.B.A (North American Boxing Association) Super-Welterweight Championship Title, the junior title to the WBA title (World title), with an 8th round TKO victory over Anton Robinson. That same year, Travis became the #1 contender in the WBA Jr. Middleweight division and was mandatory to fight for the World title.

After a 13 month layoff – Travis Simms finally received his opportunity to fight for the WBA World Title. The WBA had mandated the title fight between (then Champion) Alejandro “Terra” Garcia of Tijuana, Mexico. On December 13, 2003, Travis became the “new” WBA Super-Welterweight Champion of the World with a 5th round KO over the “Terra” Garcia. Saturday, October 2, 2004 at Madison Square Garden, Travis successfully made his first defense of his crown against veteran Bronco McKart.

After a 2-yr layoff that included litigation with the WBA (for not enforcing his mandatory to fight for the title in 2002) the WBA stripping him of his title and finally reaching a settlement agreement with the WBA that included them reinstating him as “Champion In Recess”, the undefeated Simms returned to the ring and Simms used the opportunity to redeem his World Champion status by stopping Rivera in the 9th round. Travis went on to defend his title on July 7, 2007 against undefeated Joachim Alcine. A controversial decision landed Simms with his first loss and reign as the WBA Super Welterweight Champion.

Travis has never lost his zest for boxing and is well on his way back to World Title status. He’s won his last two fights and working on the final stages of opening a boxing gym in his hometown and forming a boxing promotional company that will feature some of the best talent in the world.
